7:00 PM The George Lernis Jazz Quartet and World Fusion Ensemble, Esthema Live at the Lily Pad

Lernis Band Pic.jpg

Join The George Lernis Jazz Quartet and the World Fusion Ensemble, Esthema for an inspired evening of music. This is the first time these two unique ensembles will be sharing an evening, the common thread being George Lernis, leader/composer of his Jazz Quartet and percussionist extraordinaire for Esthema. The all ages evening begins promptly at 7PM and has a cover of $10.00.

Esthema's music has been called "breathtaking World Fusion music" by Indie-Music.com and Joel Simches in Boston's The Noise Magazine stated that "I could not recommend this more highly to lovers of world and jazz music." Janie Franz in Skope Magazine wrote that Esthema are "masters of world fusion like no one has ever done before" and Barry Cleveland in Guitar Player Magazine wrote that Esthema "plays at a truly world-class level, with authenticity, aplomb, and exuberance." Join Esthema as they premiere compositions from their future release, Long Goodbye.

The George Lernis Jazz Quartet just released their first album called "Shapes of Nature". "Shapes of Nature, the debut recording of George Lernis Jazz Quartet, introduces the distinctive music of the talented drummer-percussionist-composer. Citing the last Tony Williams as his primary model for his modernistic approach to drumming, Lernis expands up on the restrictive role of timekeeper, playing a naturally flowing amalgamation of shifting rhythms the distinguishes his work from more typical mainstream jazz while maintaining an appealing sound. The melodies of the compositions were greatly influenced by middle-eastern scales. Like the Shapes of Nature, this album serves as a canvas of variform sounds, colors and rhythms."

TORN SHORTS PIC.jpg

Torn Shorts started in June 2010 as Josh Grabert's studio project. Josh also started gigging solo at bars and clubs in the Providence area and all over New England. Over a year later Torn Shorts has formed into a full band including members of the band The Sun*Dried Alibi: Nick Molak (guitar/bass) and Brendan Tompkins (drums/percussion), who have been playing together in different bands since 2006.

Torn Shorts has re-worked the studio tracks to full band rockers, and the live shows also include new material the band has been working on together. The band is working hard at tightening their sound and has been booking shows in the New England area. Keep a look out for Torn Shorts coming to your town. You won't want to miss the show.

7:30 PM Kevin Harris Project

When the unmistakable musical influences of Thelonious Monk, Danilo Perez, and Charlie Parker intersect with J.S. Bach, Scott Joplin, and the folkloric rhythms of Cuba, could one possibly conceptualize the celebration that occurs at that intersection? Boston-based jazz pianist Kevin Harris plays a distinctive combination of traditional and contemporary music that seeks to explore such a crossroads. Jazztimes magazine says “Harris possesses a spare style and gentle touch” and the Boston Globe quotes that “Harris has worked to refine the creative push and pull of a music that demands it.” Among his most recent and upcoming collaborations are Avishai Cohen, Steve Langone, Eddie Gomez Marco Pignataro, Carlos Averhoff, Richie Barshay, Ben Street, Ralph Peterson, Ralph Bowen, Jason Palmer, Jerry Bergonzi, Cecil McBee, Bob Moses, and Terri Lyne Carrington. Harris is currently on the faculty at Berklee College of Music where he teaches jazz piano and summer advanced theory classes and piano labs. Committed to the community and to getting youth involved in music, Kevin has also conducted local and international clinics in both public and private schools throughout the USA, Caribbean, and Europe. In 2000 Harris started five separate band programs with help from “Arts In Progress,” a Boston based arts organization.

Harris thrives on communication. A typical performance/clinic always involves interacting with the audience that in turn inspires a sense of joyful connectedness and community.

"Participation,” Harris says, "is what keeps our souls alive.
